Key Stages of Antim Sanskar
• Preparation: The body is washed with holy water, milk, or ghee, dressed in white adorned with flowers, and sometimes sesame seeds.
• Procession: The body is carried on a stretcher to the cremation ground (Shmashana), often while chanting “Ram Nam Satya Hai”.
• Cremation (Mukhagni): The eldest son or male relative lights the funeral pyre, often starting at the head, to liberate the soul.
• Post-Cremation Rituals:
• Phul Chugna (Asthi Sanchayan): Collecting ashes and bones on the 1st, 3rd, or 7th day.
• Asthi Visarjan: Immersing the ashes in a sacred river, such as the Ganges, to purify the soul.
• Mourning Period (Sootak): Lasts 10–13 days, during which the family stays at home, avoids social functions, and offers daily prayers and food (Pinda Daan) to the departed.
